Listerine is a brand of antiseptic mouthwash product produced by Johnson & Johnson that has been used for over a century. The original Listerine formula was developed in 1879 by Joseph Lawrence and Jordan Lambert, who named it after the English surgeon Sir Joseph Lister, who pioneered antiseptic surgery. In the early 20th century, Listerine was marketed as a general germ-killer and sold in New York City pharmacies. It was later promoted as a remedy for halitosis – bad breath – becoming the first widely accepted commercial mouthwash in the United States.

Today, Listerine is available in several formulations including alcohol-based Original Formula, Cool Mint, Freshburst and other specialized versions such as Tartar Control/Protection and Whitening Rinse. It is also available in children's sizes with reduced levels of alcohol content to reduce irritation of children's gums and throat. In addition to its use as an oral rinse, Listerine has also been used to treat athlete's foot fungus, dandruff and other topical conditions.
